miami fav #92 / the perseid and the everglades

the perseid meteor shower only comes once a year. having lived in a city for 8 years, and being kind of scared to venture outside of said city (yes, i was one of those people), i never saw a meteor shower. but, in miami, we have this beautiful backyard called the everglades. the perseid shower falls close to my birthday, as well as the birthday of a good friend. so, we thought, why not take a late night expedition to go see it!? it was a thursday night, and we left around 12 and took the tamiami trail to where the glades gets really really dark. shark valley. we pulled in and next to a car full of people. the area was pretty packed. after laughing at two people wearing mosquito nets around their faces, we got out, and then remembered what karma was like. bug spray was immediately applied and shirts and jackets were buttoned up to their highest degree.  even in the miami heat. i’ll take the heat over those freakin’ bites any day. and then we laid back and watched nature at its finest. the stars were literally and figuratively explosive. how beautiful. i have never seen so many sparkles. so much mystery. so much pure and utter beauty. i tried to take photos, but failed horribly. which was okay. because instead i just enjoyed the moment. and came out with this really cool, yet creepy photo of two unicorns in the sky. in the background, while we starred into the night sky, you could hear one of the other caravans playing acoustic guitar. it sounds hippie. and, it was. but it was also awesome. fine. groovy. i can’t wait to go again next year. or sooner. maybe to see the leonids or the geminids. yes, i’m a dork. but this time, i won’t forget the mosquito net. everglades, thanks for existing. i like you. a lot.
