miami fav #119 / flying trapeze

when i heard that miami had flying trapeze classes, i obviously had to go. that weekend. i mean, what was i waiting for? how had i never known that this awesome experience existed for non-carnies? luckily, four of my fabulous friends also saw the opportunity for fun and joined me. let me tell you: IT IS AMAZING. at first i was thinking, i’ll probably get to swing back and forth really high in the air on a bar for a bit, and that’s cool. i wouldn’t have believed you if you told me that every person taking a lesson that day would not just learn how to ‘swing’ but also how to hang UPSIDE down, do BACKFLIPS off the bar, and DO A CATCH. even if you crossed your heart, hope to die (you know the drill). i mean, zomg. it’s too much! there is no way! the lesson is only 2 hours! and there are 7 of us! but lo and behold. we did it. we did it all. and we loved every freaking second of it. of course my arms felt like someone had been trying to stretch them off of me for days. and the backs of my knees looked like i had been caned. but, whatever. it was more than worth it. if you’re looking for something extreme and fun, you could do something passive like skydiving. or you can tear it up and trapeze till you drop. i’ll choose the latter.

miami fav #118 / wall’s

i love the 50’s. play me some billie and ella and i’m content. add poodle skirts, saddle shoes and buddy holly, and now it’s a party. let me split a malt shake with a cute boy in a varsity sweater and i swoon. so i’m kind of in love with wall’s for giving me the opportunity to live out some of my 1950’s fantasy. yummy ice cream. gentlemen prefer blondes playing on a black and white tv. 1950’s tunes dripping out of the speakers. ah! i die. they also bring the neighborhood it’s own little drive-in movie area. pull up or sit on an umbrella covered table and watch some favored old (but good) films after the sun sets. although, being the dessert whore i am, i probably would have loved wall’s anyway. they had me at ‘life’s short, eat dessert first.’ i completely agree. diamonds are a girl’s best friend. but desserts come pretty close to the top too.

miami itinerary #12 / 007 doral

partake in parkour, visit arabia, eat some cake, and drink like a champion.

as james bond would say, “i love a drive in the country, don’t you?” in doral, (a place where chain restaurants and cow pastures collide) who knew you could learn how to move like the 007 himself. it is my pleasure to introduce you to the miami freerunning and parkour academy. spend the day learning the tricks of these amazing street performers and visiting some original places in this miami neighborhood. and you thought christmas only came once a year.

miami itineraries

i probably should have explained these a little sooner. but sometimes i’m a blonde. however, after explaining miami itineraries to some people recently, i got the reaction: ‘oh, so THAT’S what those were on your blog. i was always wondering…’ so, here’s the deal: when i first got to miami, i felt that almost every miami event/’things-to-do-ish’ website i looked at only listed evening (read: drinking) events (read: clubs). i had just moved from the socialite capital of the world (okay, one of the top 5. trust me.) and i wanted something else. miami was beautiful! it was sunny almost every day! and there just HAD to be things to do during the day that didn’t involve ONLY an early happy hour. so, i did some more research and found some great places i wanted to check out. but, no site could ever tell me what else was in the vacinity. to a new person, this is so frustrating. for instance, if i want to go to fairchild gardens, and i’m new here - no site tells me what else i can do around the area. i mean, people gotta eat! and maybe i DO want a drink (albeit AFTER i do something other than drinking). AND what if there is something else cool in that area that i could do on the same day! it was like crickets out there. nada. zilch. nothing. so, i was lucky enough to meet a very awesome person at miami.com and i complained to him about this. and he said, ‘well, why don’t you start writing something?’ and i said, ‘hmpf, fine. i will.’ and that’s how the miami itineraries were started. i’ve had a blast doing them. some of them consist of doing research beforehand and planning the whole day out, making friends go with me to try it, and then writing about what works. other times, i pick one activity and then make my friends spend painstaking hours exploring the whole area with me until we find the gems. in the end, they always end up being so much fun. i really appreciate miami.com for hosting the articles - as i hope they reach more newcomers, so that more people can come to love miami, instead of getting frustrated when they first arrive. it’s all about spreading the miami love. =) so, in case you’ve missed them, i’ve posted links below. and expect a few more soon! hope you like them! (oh, and if you have any ideas, send them my way! miamifavs@gmail.com) xoxo, m

happy thanksgiving!

in the spirit of giving, and in celebration of the day of thanks, i wrote a post entitled ‘ten reasons to be thankful you live in miami’ for beached miami. check it out here.

happy thanksgiving fellow miamians! i cannot wait to celebrate the rest of the holiday season with you. under palm trees. in the sun. doing crazy things. and smiling all the way.

annnnnd i would like to thank robby cambell from beached miami for the above ‘turkafied’ logo. amazing. and jordan melnick for thinking i’d be a good fit as a guest blogger on their awesome blog. as always, you two rock.

xoxo, m

miami itinerary #11 / roller derby (whip it. become one of the grrls…)

sure, you can call roller derby grrls feminists or punks; or you can just admit that you’re jealous that they have more fun than you. and can quite possibly kick your butt. more than once, if needed. i say, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. you’ll have a blast, get a killer workout, and become a skating hellion before you know it (and maybe gain a little florida spirit while you’re at it). but first, you’ll start out as fresh meat. and you never thought you could relive your freshman year again…

miami fav #84 / this house

this house is like a breath of fresh air. i feel like it has been transplanted from the italian country-side. like a guest house in a vineyard. but it’s not. it’s on south beach. and i love it. i want to live here. i imagine the inside to look like a cottage. warm and cozy. i love the old-fashioned mailbox. i love the ivy and the shrubs with bright pink flowers. imagine waking up to this every morning. walking down the stair case. breathing in the fresh air. getting a little taste of country. and then walking four blocks to the beach. perfection? i think so.

miami itinerary #10 / sunset

where miami meets LA.

greetings loved ones. let’s take a journey. west coast-style. and bring your friends. ‘cause we’re going to follow the latest hollywood trends. we’re going on a trip where the grass is really greener. where we’re going to werk it, and get a little leaner. it’s a little place called sunset. fitting name for the place, that can bring us a little piece of LA. I can attest, sunrise is better, but sunsets can be worth the trip. especially when seen from the sunset strip.

follow your itinerary here (includes the bar method, deli lane and wall’s old fashioned ice cream!): http://www.miami.com/sunset-daytrip-article

miami itinerary #9 / salsa

if you’re anything like me, you’ve wanted to learn how to salsa dance since your first toe touched ground in miami (there must be something in the air). of course, time escapes us, and we keep pushing off our dreams of learning salsa and being the next star on SYTYCD. however, if we really embraced the cuban culture that has made miami what it is today, we’d say ‘Vamos echar un pie!’ so, let’s ‘¡Meter mano!’ cuban-style. and what better place to do that then on south beach, surrounded by cuban design, cigars, food, coffee and attitude.

miami itinerary #8 / miracle mile

miami is a melting pot of culture. so why not spend a day exploring some of them? and more specifically, the amazing cuisines they have blessed us with. i say start with a little taste of europe. luckily for us, you can get a pretty good taste all in one spot: miracle mile. spend the morning in paris, eat lunch like a roman, and end your day relaxing like you’re in spain; with some shopping inbetween of course. you know the saying: when in the gables…
